PART 1
“You don’t belong at this event.”
I didn’t hear the words directly, but they were loud enough to reach me. My husband, Alejandro Montes, whispered them to his mistress as they prepared to leave for the most important corporate gala of the year.
I was still upstairs in our mansion, standing in front of the mirror. The sleeves of my navy-blue dress had begun to wear thin, but it was the nicest one I owned—or at least the nicest one I allowed myself to wear.
From the window, I watched Alejandro step confidently into his black SUV while Camila Rivas, dressed in a shimmering champagne-colored gown and wearing a dazzling diamond necklace, slipped her arm through his as if she already belonged beside him.
Our longtime housekeeper, Doña Lupita, approached him cautiously.
“Sir, should I tell Mrs. Mariana that she can come downstairs now?”
Alejandro didn’t even glance toward my window.
“There’s no need,” he replied. “Tonight, I’m going with Camila.”
Those few words brought three years of humiliation rushing back all at once.
I slowly walked downstairs.
Camila looked me over from head to toe before letting out a mocking smile.
“So… you’re the wife,” she said. “Now I understand why Alejandro never takes you anywhere.”
I turned to my husband, hoping—just once—that he would defend me.
He never did.
Instead, he adjusted his tie, offered Camila his arm, and said,
“Come on. We’re running late.”
His silence hurt far more than any insult ever could.
A moment later, they walked out together, leaving me standing alone in the doorway, watching their car disappear into the city lights—and with it, the last illusion I still had about my marriage.
A few minutes later, my phone vibrated.

An unknown number had sent me a message.
It was a photo.
Camila was smiling triumphantly from the back seat of Alejandro’s SUV while his reflection appeared in the window beside her.
Beneath the picture were just a few words.
“Tonight, he’ll finally be mine. Sit at home and wait.”
I didn’t cry.
Somewhere along the way, I’d already run out of tears.
Instead, I opened the last drawer of my vanity and pulled out a small red velvet box.
Inside was a SIM card I hadn’t used in three years.
I slipped it into my phone.
Only one contact appeared.
Dad.
My hands trembled as I pressed the call button.
After several rings, a familiar voice answered.
“Mariana?”
Hearing that single word broke something inside me.
“Dad…” I whispered. “I want to come home.”
Silence filled the line.
Then Ernesto Salazar—the businessman feared by some of the most powerful people in Mexico—spoke.
But in that moment, he wasn’t a billionaire.
He was simply a father who had finally heard his daughter’s voice again.
“My little girl,” he said softly. “Stay where you are… I’m coming to get you.”
That was the moment I realized the night would not end with tears.
It would end with a truth so powerful that everyone who had looked down on me—including Alejandro—would soon discover exactly who Mariana Salazar had always been.
