The manager opened the passbook exactly where Grandma had placed the faded red stamp. He studied the routing code, then looked at my driver’s license again.
Once.
Then twice.
His expression changed.
“Where did you get this passbook?” he asked quietly.
“It belonged to my grandmother. I found it among her things after she passed away.”
He looked back at the old account number.
Then at me.
“Ma’am… this account shouldn’t still be active.”
My heart skipped.
“What do you mean?”
He lowered his voice.
“This account was opened more than thirty years ago. But there’s something in the system that makes no sense.”
He turned the screen slightly toward himself.
A long silence followed.
Then he whispered:
“Your grandmother wasn’t the only person listed on this account.”
I stared at him.
“Who else was on it?”
The manager hesitated.
Then he said a name I hadn’t heard in decades.
And suddenly, I understood why Grandma had stamped that page in red.
