I returned home from the hospital with two suitcases, completely exhausted after spending weeks in Pine Valley helping my father recover from heart surgery. When I walked into my apartment in Oakwood, all I wanted was peace, quiet, and a chance to rest. Instead, I found my mother-in-law sitting comfortably in my living room as if she owned the place. She was even wearing my bathrobe.

“This place doesn’t belong to you anymore,” she said coldly.

Then she added without hesitation:

“If you have any dignity left, take your things and leave. This apartment belongs to my son and me now.”

Those were the first words I heard after being away for nearly two months.

I was exhausted. My coat was wrinkled from traveling, my hair was a mess, and I was dragging two heavy suitcases behind me. All I wanted was a hot shower, a cup of coffee, and my own bed.

But something was wrong.

My sheets were gone.

My plants had disappeared.

And my home no longer felt like my home.

The air smelled of cheap incense and reheated food. An ugly slipcover had been thrown over my beige couch. My decorations were nowhere to be seen. In their place hung a large framed photo of my husband, Thomas, smiling beside his mother on our wedding day.

And there she was.

Mrs. Higgins.

Standing in my living room like she belonged there.

She was wearing my pale pink robe—the one I had bought during a trip to Blue Harbor. In her hand was my blue coffee mug, a gift from my mother when I signed the papers for the apartment.

“Mrs. Higgins… what exactly are you doing here?” I asked, struggling to stay calm.

She looked at me with a smug smile.

“I live here now. Thomas finally realized that his mother is worth more than a selfish wife.”

My eyes moved toward the hallway.

Boxes, bags, blankets, medication, and personal belongings were scattered everywhere. My books had been tossed onto the floor.

“This apartment is mine,” I said firmly.

She laughed.

“Yours? Don’t be ridiculous, Alice. My son told me everything. You only put the property in your name so you could control him. Thomas pays for everything. Thomas makes the decisions. And he decided that I’m staying.”

Anger surged through me, but I forced myself to remain calm.

I had purchased that apartment years before I got married. I paid for it myself through overtime shifts, sacrifices, and countless sleepless nights. Thomas had never contributed to the mortgage or the household expenses.

“I’m calling building management,” I said.

Her smile vanished instantly.

“You don’t want to make a scene,” she replied. “People will think you’re the unreasonable one. Besides, Thomas already handled the paperwork.”

“Then we’ll take a look at it.”

I pulled out my phone and asked the building manager to come upstairs with the official property records.

While we waited, she paced around the living room, trying to appear confident, though her nervousness was becoming obvious.

“You’re unbelievably ungrateful,” she muttered. “My son defended you when everyone else criticized you. And this is how you repay him?”

“I don’t owe anyone anything for this apartment.”

“You owe respect to his mother.”

“You entered my home without permission.”

She stepped closer, close enough for me to notice that her makeup was beginning to smear.

“When you see the documents Thomas signed while you were gone,” she said quietly, “you’ll understand everything… and you’ll be the one begging for mercy.”

At that exact moment, we heard the elevator arrive on our floor.

And that was when I realized my marriage was about to fall apart completely.
