The family had been looking forward to a quiet day by the sea. The children built sandcastles near the water while their parents watched from a nearby blanket. Their father, Martin, was standing in the shallows when he suddenly stopped and grabbed his leg.
“Something stung me,” he said.
At first, his wife, Nia, thought he had stepped on a shell. Then Martin tried to walk toward the shore and stumbled. She hurried to support him. The area around his ankle was beginning to swell, and he looked pale.
Their young daughter ran closer. “Daddy, get up!”
Nia asked someone nearby to call for emergency help while she stayed with Martin and reassured the children. A few beachgoers helped make room on the sand. Martin’s breathing seemed shallow, and the wait for the paramedics felt much longer than it was.
When help arrived, the paramedics assessed him and took him to the hospital. Nia followed with the children, still unsure whether the injury had come from an animal, a sharp object, or something else in the water.
At the hospital, the medical team examined Martin and monitored him. They asked where he had been standing and when the pain began. Nia answered as clearly as she could, replaying the moment in her mind in case she had missed something.
A doctor eventually came out to speak with her.
“Martin is stable,” he said. “We’re continuing to observe him while we investigate the cause of the injury.”
Nia wanted a clearer answer. “Do you know what bit him?”
“Not yet. The mark alone doesn’t tell us what caused it. We’ve sent a sample for further testing.”
She returned to the waiting area, where the children had grown quiet. She told them their father was being cared for and sat with them until the doctor came back.
This time, he carried a folder.
“We’ve reviewed the initial results,” he said. “There’s no sign of a serious complication at the moment, but we found something unusual in the sample. We’re checking it before we draw any conclusions.”
Nia looked toward the doors leading to Martin’s room.
“What kind of thing?”
The doctor paused, choosing his words carefully.
“That’s what we’re trying to find out.”
When Nia was finally allowed to see Martin, he was tired but awake. She took his hand and told him the children were safe. He squeezed her fingers, and for a moment they focused on the relief of being together.
But the question remained: what had touched his leg in the water—and what had the hospital found in the sample?
