PART 1 – THE FUNERAL THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
“You came to my father’s funeral with your new girlfriend… That took a lot of nerve, Ramiro.”
Julietta Santillán’s voice was calm.
It didn’t tremble.
Beneath the towering cypress trees of the cemetery, Ramiro Ibarra stood in a perfectly tailored black suit, trying to appear composed. Beside him stood Camila, visibly pregnant, quietly holding his arm.
Whispers spread through the crowd.
Guests exchanged shocked glances.
Camila’s presence at such a solemn moment did not go unnoticed.
Ramiro pretended not to notice.
He believed the hardest part was already behind him.
Arturo Santillán, founder of the Santillán Group and one of the country’s most respected businessmen, had just been laid to rest.
With his father-in-law gone, Ramiro believed no one would be left to protect Giulietta.
He couldn’t stop remembering something Arturo had told him years earlier.
“You don’t truly love my daughter. You only love what our family name can give you.”
At the time, Ramiro had simply smiled.
But he had never forgotten those words.
As the years passed, he became convinced that one day he would have his revenge.
Only a few weeks earlier, he had filed for divorce.
To friends and acquaintances, he claimed he wanted a peaceful separation, explaining that Giulietta had been emotionally overwhelmed by her father’s long illness.
Most people believed him.
Giulietta chose silence.
Dressed entirely in black, she stood motionless before the family mausoleum.
Her face was calm.
Her gaze unwavering.
That quiet dignity unsettled people far more than anger ever could.
Camila leaned closer to Ramiro.
“Starting today, everything changes,” she whispered.
He nodded confidently.
He believed this day marked the beginning of his new life.
A few minutes later, Roberto Varela, the Santillán family’s longtime attorney, stepped forward.
After greeting everyone, he explained that, according to Arturo Santillán’s final wishes, several provisions of the will would be read immediately before the family and the company’s senior executives.
Silence settled over the cemetery.
The attorney began by listing charitable donations, gifts to longtime employees, and inheritances for relatives.
Ramiro listened impatiently.
Then Roberto’s tone changed.
“As for the controlling interest in the Santillán Group, its affiliated companies, and the remaining family assets…”
Every eye turned toward him.
“The entire estate will be transferred exclusively to Giulietta Santillán.”
A heavy silence swept through the cemetery.
Someone quietly asked how much the inheritance was worth.
The attorney answered calmly.
“Current estimates exceed three hundred million dollars, not including the future appreciation of several major assets.”
Ramiro stood frozen.
Camila instinctively tightened her grip on his arm.
Giulietta took a few slow steps toward him.
She looked him straight in the eyes.
Then she spoke softly.
“So, Ramiro… which one of us really thought they had everything under control?”
Before he could answer, Roberto Varela spoke again.
“There is one additional provision contained in Mr. Arturo Santillán’s will.”
The guests turned back toward the attorney.
“By his instructions, several files compiled over the past few years will be delivered to the appropriate authorities for legal review.”
The atmosphere changed instantly.
For the first time that day…
Ramiro felt every certainty begin to collapse.
As he walked away from the cemetery, one thought refused to leave his mind.
He had come believing he was attending only his father-in-law’s funeral.
Instead…
It might also have been the beginning of the end of his own story.
