Victor stood completely still.
Dominic stared at him for several long seconds, his face filled with disappointment. Then his eyes returned to the small device Marcus had discovered.
“How long?” Dominic finally asked.
Victor said nothing.
“How long has this been going on?” Dominic demanded.
“Three years,” Dominic answered himself before Victor could speak. “Three years during which I trusted you. Three years during which I considered you one of the few people I could depend on.”
Victor tried to defend himself.
“You don’t know the whole story.”
“Then tell me.”
Dominic pointed toward the small device.
For years, he had believed that his hearing problems were the result of the explosion three years earlier.
But now, after seeing that device, that explanation no longer made sense.
Victor had deliberately caused the situation.
“So it was you…” Dominic whispered.
Victor remained silent.
His silence was enough of an answer.
I held Marcus tightly in my arms while the tension inside the room became unbearable. My son didn’t understand everything that was happening. He only knew that he had discovered something strange.
Dominic looked at the device again.
“You installed this to affect my hearing?”
Victor finally nodded.
“It was only supposed to be temporary.”
Dominic’s expression hardened.
“Why?”
Victor looked toward the broken windows before finally speaking.
Three years earlier, Dominic had discovered that large amounts of money were disappearing from his organization. He had started examining the financial records and was getting dangerously close to discovering who was responsible.
The answer had been standing beside him all along.
It was Victor.
“You wanted me unable to understand what was happening around me,” Dominic said.
Victor didn’t deny it.
“You controlled everything,” Victor admitted. “As long as you remained in charge, I would never have the opportunity to take your place.”
Dominic said nothing.
Victor wanted the company, the influence, and the reputation Dominic had built.
For three years, he had pretended to be Dominic’s most loyal protector while secretly working against him.
“And all this time, you pretended to be on my side.”
Victor lowered his eyes.
“Yes.”
Dominic’s anger was obvious.
But beneath it was something even stronger.
Disappointment.
He had trusted the wrong person.

The men in the room immediately stepped forward. Victor was disarmed and taken into custody.
Before leaving, Victor looked back at Dominic.
“You could have killed me.”
Dominic slowly shook his head.
“No.”
His voice remained calm.
“That would be too easy. Now you’ll have to answer for everything you’ve done.”
Victor had nothing left to say.
Suddenly, Marcus moved in my arms.
“Mom?”
I looked down at him.
“Yes, sweetheart?”
He pointed toward Dominic.
“Can he hear now?”
Dominic turned toward him.
For the first time that night, a genuine smile appeared on his face.
“Yes,” he said softly. “I can hear now.”
Marcus smiled proudly.
“Because of me.”
Dominic knelt down in front of him.
“You found something nobody else noticed.”
Marcus studied his face.
“Can you really hear me?”
“Yes.”
The boy’s smile grew wider.
Then he had an idea.
“Then say my name.”
Dominic looked directly into his eyes.
“Marcus.”
Tears immediately filled my eyes.
It was only a name.
But to Dominic, it meant everything.
After three years of living in silence, believing the explosion had taken his hearing away, he could finally hear a child’s voice again.
Marcus laughed.
Dominic laughed too.
For a few seconds, nobody spoke.
The terrible tension that had filled the room seemed to disappear.
The police arrived shortly afterward.
Victor was arrested, and a full investigation began.
Authorities uncovered financial irregularities and evidence connecting Victor to what had happened three years earlier.
But the experience changed Dominic as well.
He could have become even more suspicious of everyone around him.
Instead, he chose another path.
He decided to change his life.
The security around the villa remained strict, but the atmosphere was different.
The hallways no longer felt cold and tense.
Dominic slowly realized that a life built entirely around control could eventually become its own kind of prison.
A few weeks later, he asked me to come into his office.
I assumed he wanted to discuss the investigation.
Instead, he placed an envelope on the desk.
I opened it.
Inside was an offer for a stable job, along with financial assistance that would help me provide a better life for Marcus.
The schedule was flexible enough for me to continue taking care of my son.
I looked up at Dominic.
“I can’t accept this.”
He gently shook his head.
“Yes, you can.”
“Why would you do something like this for us?”
Dominic glanced toward Marcus, who was sitting quietly in the corner drawing.
“Because your son gave me something I thought I had lost forever.”
I smiled.
“He’s just a child.”
Dominic smiled back.
“Exactly. Sometimes children notice things adults stop seeing.”
As if he had heard his name, Marcus looked up.
“Dominic!”
“Yes?”
Marcus ran toward him and held up his drawing.
“Look!”
There were three people holding hands beneath a huge yellow sun.
Marcus.
His mother.
And Dominic.
Dominic stared at the picture for several seconds.
“Is that supposed to be me?”
Marcus nodded.
“You’re our friend.”
Dominic looked at me.
Neither of us needed to say anything else.
The weeks that followed brought a completely new routine.
In the mornings, Dominic often had breakfast with us.
When the weather was nice, he would go outside with Marcus while I prepared lunch.
Marcus could talk for hours.
He told Dominic about his games, his discoveries, his dreams, and every imaginary story he created.
And Dominic listened.
He never told him to be quiet.
After three years of silence, Dominic had learned to appreciate the simplest sounds.
A child’s laughter.
A conversation around the dinner table.
Rain tapping against the windows.
The wind moving through the trees.
A voice saying his name.
They were ordinary things that most people barely noticed.
But when you’ve been deprived of them for years, they can become the most precious treasures in the world.
Whenever Marcus laughed in the garden, Dominic watched him with quiet gratitude.
Sometimes I still think about that night.
At first, I believed bringing my son to that villa had been a terrible mistake.
I was afraid of what we might find there.
I never imagined that Marcus would discover something nobody had noticed for three years.
He wasn’t looking for a secret.
He was simply curious.
And that curiosity ended up changing several lives.
Marcus helped Dominic uncover the truth about the man who had betrayed him.
But more importantly, he gave Dominic something far greater than his hearing.
He gave him a reason to open his heart again.
Dominic learned to trust.
He learned to let people into his life.
And he learned the true value of listening.
Years later, Marcus still told the story with the same childish pride.
“I fixed Dominic!”
Whenever Dominic heard him say it, he smiled.
Then he would shake his head.
“No, Marcus.”
My son would look at him curiously.
Dominic would place a hand gently on his shoulder.
“You didn’t just fix my hearing.”
He would smile.
“You fixed my life.”
