While everyone believed the mountain had erased any hope of finding me, Evan Vale had already arranged a memorial ceremony in my name.
In front of the guests, he played the grieving husband perfectly. A few steps away stood Celeste—the woman he had been seeing behind my back.
Neither of them knew the truth.
I had survived.
And so had the baby I was carrying.
While Evan prepared to close the chapter of my life forever, I was about to uncover a secret from my past that would change everything.
PART 1 — A Ceremony Held Too Soon
Three days earlier, Evan and I had been at Ravenstone Cliff.
A violent snowstorm had nearly erased the mountain landscape. I was nine months pregnant, and I kept begging him to turn back.
I only wanted to reach somewhere safe.
But in the chaos on the trail, I lost my footing and tumbled down the slope.
My fall stopped on a narrow natural ledge.
For several seconds, I could not even understand where I was. There was nothing around me but snow, wind, and a terrifying silence.
Then I thought of my baby.
I placed both hands over my stomach.
“Hold on a little longer, sweetheart. Don’t leave me now.”
I stayed as still as I could, trying to save my strength. I do not know how much time passed before a distant sound began to rise above the roar of the wind.
A helicopter was cutting through the storm.
When the rescue team finally reached me, I noticed a silver-haired man among them.
His face felt strangely familiar.
Not because I had met him before.
I had seen him in a photograph.
Richard Whitmore.
For years, my mother had kept an old photo of that very man. After she died, I also found a letter suggesting that a family secret had never been revealed.
Richard came closer. The moment he saw my face, his expression changed.

“Madison?”
I wanted to ask how he knew my name, but I had no strength left.
Richard knelt beside me.
“For now, think only about yourself and your baby. We’re getting you out of here.”
Shortly afterward, I lost consciousness.
When I opened my eyes again, I was in a hospital.
The medical staff were constantly monitoring me and my son. Richard had stayed nearby, and when I was awake enough to speak, I asked him what had happened after my disappearance.
His answer sent a chill through me.
Evan had told everyone I had been caught in an accident during the storm and that the search teams had been unable to find me.
“Does he know I survived?” I asked.
Richard shook his head.
Then he told me something even more disturbing.
Evan had already begun handling the legal and financial consequences of my presumed disappearance—with a speed that had raised suspicions.
I did not need to know every detail to understand that something was wrong.
Evan was certain I would never come back.
And he was acting as if it were a fact.
Suddenly, memories from the past few months came rushing back: conversations that stopped when I entered a room, explanations that made no sense, Celeste’s strange behavior, and decisions Evan had made that I had never truly understood.
Maybe I had ignored too many warning signs.
Richard stepped closer to my bed.
“We can announce right away that you’re alive.”
I was about to tell him to do it.
But then I changed my mind.
If Evan found out I had survived now, he would have time to alter his version of events.
“Not yet.”
Richard looked at me in surprise.
“Madison, are you sure?”
“If he truly believes I’m not coming back, he’ll keep behaving exactly as he has been.”
Richard understood.
“You want to know how far he is willing to go.”
“I want the truth. Nothing more.”
I did not want to put anyone in danger or plan revenge. If any wrongdoing was uncovered, the proper authorities would handle it through legal channels.
Richard was quiet for a moment before he nodded.
“Then we’ll do this the right way.”
That was when I finally asked the question that had haunted me since I saw him on the mountain.
“Why did my mother have a photo of you?”
Richard lowered his eyes.
When he looked up again, I saw an emotion in them that he had been trying to hide.
The letter I found after my mother’s death had been telling the truth.
Richard Whitmore was my biological father.
For years, family conflicts and old silences had kept us from knowing the truth about each other. By the time Richard tried to piece together what had happened, too much time had already passed.
And now fate had brought us together in the most unlikely circumstances.
I wanted to ask him a hundred questions.
But I did not have time.
The rhythm on the monitor suddenly changed.
The medical team rushed into the room. Richard stepped back to give them space.
I looked at the screen and felt fear take over me again.
At that moment, Evan no longer mattered.
Neither did Celeste.
The money, the lies, and every explanation I would demand later could wait.
There was only my son.
Before they took me out of the room, Richard managed to take my hand.
“Madison, I’m here.”
I looked at him for a moment.
“Then stay.”
The doors closed behind us.
To the rest of the world, Madison Vale was still a woman lost in the storm.
Evan could keep believing that I would never return.
But he was wrong.
I was alive.
My son was still fighting.
And when the time came for me to return, I would not need revenge.
I would only need the truth to finally come to light.
