After nine months away for work, I returned home hoping for a quiet evening and a warm welcome from my husband.
Instead, I found a laminated notice near the front door.
HOUSE RULES
At first, I thought I had entered the wrong place. Then I saw the familiar scratch near the bookcase and the framed photograph I had hung years ago.
It was my home.
But it no longer felt like it.
Boxes crowded the foyer. My entry bench had been covered with unfamiliar cushions, and I could hear a television playing upstairs.
In my bedroom.
“Ethan?” I called.
No answer came.
Then my mother-in-law, Diane, walked into the hallway wearing my robe. Behind her, Ethan’s sister, Megan, held my favorite mug.
Neither woman seemed surprised to see me.
“You’re back sooner than we expected,” Diane said.
I looked around the room. “Why are you both staying here?”
Diane handed me the laminated sheet.
“You’ve been gone for a while,” she replied. “We have a routine now. It will be easier if you follow it.”
The page listed meal times, cleaning duties, and household schedules.
Then I read the last two rules.
The main bedroom had been given to Diane because she preferred it.
And I was expected to make a monthly contribution toward expenses.
“In my own house?” I asked.
Before Diane could answer, the garage door opened.
Ethan entered with grocery bags in his hands. He stopped when he saw me holding the list.
I raised the paper.
“Can you explain this?”
His silence told me more than any answer could.
