Excerpt: I thought I was taking a quiet walk through Chicago with the woman I was supposed to marry. Then one glance across the park shattered everything I believed. My ex was standing there with three children… and the moment I looked into the eyes of one little girl, I realized the impossible—they were mine.

PART 1

I thought I was spending a quiet afternoon walking through the streets of Chicago with Camille, the woman I was about to marry.

She walked beside me gracefully, her engagement ring sparkling in the afternoon sunlight. Excitedly, she talked about the final wedding preparations, already imagining the ceremony, the flowers, the music, and the guests.

I listened absentmindedly.

My mind was somewhere else.

Around us, Grant Park was full of life. Families enjoyed the beautiful weather, children played on the grass, people strolled beneath the tree-lined paths, and food vendors welcomed visitors in a peaceful atmosphere.

There was something comforting about its simplicity.

An ordinary life.

A life I had never truly known.

My name is Adrian Vale.

Today, I run a major business empire built over generations by my family. I grew up in a world where every decision had to be carefully calculated, where trust was given sparingly, and where responsibility almost always came before emotion.

Camille kept talking about the wedding.

I nodded automatically.

Then something caught my eye.

A few yards away, near a small food stand, a young woman was pushing a large stroller.

My breath caught.

It was Maya.

Four years had passed since the last time I had seen her.

Her dark hair was tied back in a simple bun.

She wore modest, unassuming clothes.

She looked more tired than I remembered, but her eyes hadn’t changed.

I still remembered her smile.

Her strength.

And all the dreams we had once planned together.

For a few seconds, time seemed to stand still.

Then I noticed the stroller.

It wasn’t carrying one child.

Or two.

But three.

Three small children sat side by side.

They looked about three years old.

One watched the people passing by with endless curiosity.

A little girl laughed as she pointed at a flock of birds taking flight.

The third child quietly played with several toy cars, carefully lining them up in perfect order.

Then the little girl looked up at me.

I froze.

There was something hauntingly familiar in her eyes.

For a brief moment…

It felt as though I were looking into a reflection of myself.

Just then, Maya lifted her head.

Our eyes met.

Her expression changed instantly.

Surprise gave way to unmistakable fear.

Without saying a word, she tightened her grip on the stroller.

Then she turned around.

Within seconds, she disappeared into the crowd.

I remained frozen.

Camille kept talking, completely unaware of what had just happened.

I couldn’t hear a single word.

Dozens of questions raced through my mind.

Why had Maya disappeared without ever contacting me again?

Why did she look so frightened when she saw me?

And above all…

Why did I suddenly feel that this chance encounter was about to shatter everything I thought I knew about my past?

At that moment, one thing became absolutely clear.

I couldn’t let this opportunity slip away a second time.

I had to discover what had really happened during all those years.
