Mom, there are little fish in my tummy… and they keep biting me.”

It was two in the morning when my five-year-old daughter, Lily, stumbled into my room in tears, clutching her stomach with both hands.

“Mom, please help me… There are little fish inside me. They’re swimming around and biting.”

At first, I thought she’d had a nightmare. But when I tried to guide her back to bed, she let out a cry so painful that I knew something was seriously wrong.

Her forehead was slick with sweat. Her face had gone pale, and her small body was trembling.

“Show me where it hurts, sweetheart.”

“Here, Mom… I want the fish to go away.”

My husband, Daniel, was away on a business trip in Denver. I wrapped Lily in a blanket and rushed her to the pediatric emergency department in Scottsdale, Arizona.

The whole way there, she whimpered softly.

“Mom, get them out…”

Every word broke my heart.

At the hospital, the doctors examined her and ordered urgent tests. As a technician performed an ultrasound, I noticed her expression change. She frowned, fell quiet, then stepped out to get a specialist.

A few minutes later, a doctor studied the images. His face suddenly turned pale.

“Mrs. Rachel, we need to run some additional tests.”

“What’s wrong with my daughter?”

He didn’t answer right away. He stepped into the hallway, where I heard him ask someone to notify the authorities about a suspected case of child abuse.

I froze.

Abuse? What could he possibly mean?

Ten minutes later, two police officers arrived. Officer Carter came over to speak with me.

“Who usually takes care of your daughter?”

“I do. I’m her mother.”

“Do you work outside the home?”

“No. I stay home to look after Lily.”

The officers exchanged a glance, then led me into a separate room. Officer Bennett placed an X-ray in front of me.

Dozens of tiny bright spots were visible inside my daughter’s abdomen, clustered together.

“Your daughter swallowed thirty-six powerful magnets.”

My blood ran cold.

“Thirty-six? That can’t be right!”

The officer explained that magnets like these could attract each other through the walls of the intestines and cause severe internal injuries.

“We need to find out how they got into her system.”

I shook my head in panic.

“We don’t have anything like that at home! Lily would never do this!”

But no one seemed willing to believe me.

Not long after, Daniel arrived with his mother, Patricia. When I saw him, I hoped he would pull me into a reassuring hug.

Instead, he stopped in front of me, glaring.

“Rachel, what did you do to our daughter?”

“Daniel, please. Just listen to me…”

“Thirty-six magnets! How could you not notice?”

Patricia immediately pressed a hand to her chest.

“I’ve always said Rachel spends too much time on her phone and taking online classes. She doesn’t keep a close enough eye on that poor child!”

I stared at her, stunned.

“Patricia, Lily is in pain. This is not the time to blame me.”

But Patricia kept crying in front of the officers.

“My poor granddaughter…”

That was when something began to feel wrong.

Neither Daniel nor Patricia had asked when Lily’s pain started. They hadn’t even asked what she’d said about it.

They seemed focused only on making me look responsible.

The next few hours dragged on. Lily needed emergency surgery. I waited in the corridor with my hands clenched, staring at the operating-room doors.

At last, the surgeon came out.

“Your daughter made it through the operation. We had to remove a small section of her intestine because it was damaged. The magnets had been inside her for more than twenty-four hours.”

I burst into tears with relief.

Daniel turned to me at once.

“You heard him. More than a day! How could you not have noticed?”

I didn’t answer. I looked straight at the doctor.

“Can I ask you something?”

“Of course.”

“Could a five-year-old swallow thirty-six magnets on her own?”

The surgeon paused.

“The tests can’t tell us exactly how she swallowed them. But given the number of magnets and the discomfort they can cause, this needs to be investigated carefully.”

“Are you saying someone might have given them to her?”

“That’s something the investigators will have to determine.”

Silence settled over the hallway.

Daniel slowly lowered his eyes. Patricia abruptly stopped crying.

I watched her closely. For the first time since she’d arrived, I didn’t see anger on her face.

I saw fear—real fear, barely concealed.

Then I remembered something.

Three weeks earlier, we’d installed a small security camera in the dining room. It pointed at the table where Lily had her afternoon snack.

Another detail came back to me. The day before, Lily had spent several hours in that room. I hadn’t been with her every moment.

My heart began to pound. I reached into my bag and pulled out my phone.

Officer Carter looked at me.

“Mrs. Rachel, what are you doing?”

“We have a security camera at home.”

Daniel’s head snapped up.

“A camera?”

“Yes. It records the dining room.”

Patricia took a small step backward.

“Rachel, I don’t think we need to involve the whole family in this…”

A chill ran through me.

Why was she so worried?

I opened the security app and searched for the footage from the previous afternoon. My hands were shaking so badly that I selected the wrong date twice.

Finally, the dining room appeared on my screen.

Lily was sitting at the table, her little legs swinging beneath her chair. She looked perfectly calm.

Then someone stepped into view.

Someone Lily knew very well. Someone I had trusted to care for her countless times without a second thought.

Behind me, I heard Patricia whisper:

“Rachel… wait.”

I didn’t turn around. I handed my phone to Officer Carter.

“I want you to watch this.”

He leaned closer to the screen.

In the recording, the person bent toward Lily and placed a tiny object on the table. My daughter reached for it.

And in that moment, I recognized the face on the screen.

I couldn’t breathe.

I had never imagined seeing someone from our own family in that footage. And I never would have believed that person was hiding such a horrifying secret.
