After cutting my nine-year-old son’s hair, the barber came over to me and spoke in a low voice.
“When you get home, look carefully behind his left ear.”
I stared at him, confused.
“Why?”
But he had already stepped back.
“Just do it at home, somewhere calm.”
I had no idea that one sentence would turn an ordinary Saturday into a day I would never forget.
Ethan had been going to the same barbershop for nearly two years. Our usual barber knew him well, but that morning he was busy with another client. One of his coworkers offered to take Ethan instead.
“I’m Marcus,” he said with an easy smile.
Ethan climbed into the chair. Marcus fastened the cape around his shoulders and began the cut. Everything seemed normal. My son chatted nonstop about school, soccer, and video games while I glanced distractedly at my phone.
Then, suddenly, the buzz of the clippers stopped.
Ethan stopped talking too.
I looked up. Marcus stood behind him, carefully parting a few strands of hair near Ethan’s left ear. He was staring at something, and the relaxed expression he had worn before was gone.
“Is there a problem?” I asked.
Marcus met my eyes in the mirror, then gave a small shake of his head.
“No. I’m almost finished.”
But I knew at once that something had unsettled him.
A few minutes later, the haircut was done. Ethan jumped down from the chair and headed for the candy machine near the window. I pulled out my wallet to pay, and Marcus came over again.
“Check behind his left ear when you get home.”
“What did you see?”
He glanced around before answering.
“Something you need to look at closely.”
“Can you show me now?”
Marcus hesitated.
“I’d rather you look at it quietly, alone with him.”
I left the barbershop with a strange feeling in my chest.
Ten minutes later, Ethan and I were standing in our kitchen. I set my keys on the counter.
“Come here for a second.”
He looked worried.
“What is it? Did my haircut turn out terrible?”
“No, sweetheart. Turn around.”
I gently moved aside his freshly cut hair. At first, I almost saw nothing. Then I noticed a tiny, unfamiliar spot in the fold behind his ear. I leaned closer.

Something very small appeared to have been placed there.
I didn’t try to remove it.
“Ethan… do you know what this is?”
His expression changed. He immediately lowered his eyes.
“Look at me, Ethan. Did someone put something behind your ear?”
He was silent for several seconds. Finally, he whispered,
“Maybe the man from school.”
My heart began to race.
“What man?”
Ethan hesitated.
“The one who said he knew Dad.”
I froze. Ethan’s father had died three years earlier.
“When did that happen?”
“I don’t remember exactly.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
He gave a small shrug.
“He knew Dad’s name. I thought you knew him too.”
I picked up my phone. I didn’t want to jump to conclusions or frighten my son. I only wanted someone qualified to examine the object. So I called the authorities and calmly explained what we had found.
They told me not to touch it and to stay home with Ethan until a team arrived to assess the situation.
I locked every door.
Then we waited.
Twenty minutes later, two vehicles pulled up in front of the house. Officers came inside and carefully examined the situation. One of them looked at the area behind Ethan’s ear, then began asking questions.
“Have you recently had anyone in your home whom you didn’t know?”
“No.”
“Any technicians, repair workers, or unusual visitors?”
“Nothing like that.”
The officer exchanged a look with his colleague.
“All right. For now, don’t touch anything.”
His colleague stepped outside. I stayed close to Ethan, one hand resting on his shoulder, trying to remain calm for him.
A few moments later, the officer who had gone outside hurried back toward the entrance. His manner had changed. It looked as if he had noticed something.
“What is it?” I asked.
Before he could answer, Ethan squeezed my hand.
“Mom…”
I turned to him.
“What is it?”
Slowly, he raised one finger and pointed toward the front door.
“There’s something else.”
I followed the direction of his gaze.
And then I understood why the officer had come back so quickly.
What we had found behind Ethan’s ear might have been only one piece of something much bigger.
And a new question took hold of my mind:
Who was the man who claimed to know his father?
The rest of the story is in the first comment.
