PART 2
The reception hall fell into complete silence as I picked up the microphone.
Every guest expected to hear an emotional speech—a few heartfelt words of love before the first toast.
But I didn’t smile.
Instead, I slowly turned my gaze toward the back of the room, behind the towering marble columns.
“My parents are sitting back there,” I said calmly.
Every head turned in the same direction.
The two people who had worked their entire lives to give me a better future had been seated far from the front rows, almost out of sight, as though their presence mattered less than everyone else’s.
I looked at them for a long moment before turning back to Preston.
His expression had changed.
He realized this wedding was not going to unfold the way he had expected.
I gently placed my bouquet on the table.
Then I opened the small clutch I had been holding.
From it, I pulled out a carefully folded official document.
The moment Preston saw it, all the color drained from his face.
“Claire… put that file away,” he whispered.
I slowly shook my head.
“Not this time. For far too long, certain truths have remained hidden. Today, they deserve to be heard.”
His mother suddenly rose to her feet.
“This is neither the time nor the place for this.”
I met her gaze without raising my voice.
“On the contrary. The moment arrived the instant my parents were treated as though they didn’t matter.”
A murmur spread through the room.
Guests exchanged uneasy glances.
No one knew what was inside the document.
I did.
And so did Preston.
I slowly lifted the first page.
“This file tells a story that began several years ago. A story that involves my family… and yours.”
The silence grew even heavier.
Preston took one step toward me, then stopped.
He knew it was already too late.
I took a deep breath.
“Today was supposed to be the happiest day of our lives. But before we can build a future, I believe everyone deserves to know the whole truth.”
At that moment, no one was thinking about the wedding anymore.
Every eye in the room was fixed on the document in my hands.
And what was about to be revealed just seconds later would shake far more than a single wedding ceremony.
